Mobile app concept for Digital Art Zurich Festival

The first Digital Art Zurich Festival planned its first exhibition for 2020. In collaboration with Riverside Culture, our task was to design a mobile app that would provide information about the festival's works and artists. In addition, visitors should have the opportunity to evaluate performances and exhibits at all locations in a playful and contemporary way in order to automatically participate in the Audience Award. Our challenge was to move away from the traditional festival apps and explore new possibilities with the goal of creating a great navigation experience for the digital art festival.The committee of the Digital Art Zürich Festival selected our concept as the competition winner.

Through testing and analyzing various existing festival apps and navigation systems, we gained insights into their typical operations. Based on this research, we recognized the importance of a user-focused, simple, and flexible interface, deviating from the conventional multi-layered menu structure. As a result, our app concept revolves around an internal navigation system that allows users to seamlessly switch between menus with just one swipe. This approach ensures a straightforward, efficient, and adaptable interaction. Additionally, we incorporated an Augmented Reality (AR) feature, merging festival navigation, performance and exhibit evaluations, and a small collectible game for unlocking bonus content during the festival. In this way, AR not only facilitates easy navigation but also introduces a gamified dimension to enhance the festival experience.

Moreover, we believe that our 'one swipe' accessibility concept has broader applications, simplifying user interaction compared to traditional menu bar-based implementations. Furthermore, our research indicates that the combination of AR navigation and gamification holds significant potential for presenting digital content to users. This innovative approach not only enhances user engagement but also provides a unique and immersive experience.
